Apple has issued an urgent call to iPhone users to install a critical security patch to protect their devices from a dangerous WebKit vulnerability that hackers are actively exploiting.

The new update, iOS 16.5.1 (c), addresses this issue by closing a loophole that could compromise iPhone users’ devices.

The patch is part of Apple’s Rapid Security Response program, which delivers essential security fixes between major software updates. Unlike traditional updates, these are lightweight and quick to install, with the current update requiring only 2.8MB of data. Users are advised to install it immediately, even if they are not connected to Wi-Fi, to ensure their devices are secure.

Apple has explained that these Rapid Security Responses provide targeted improvements to critical system components like Safari, the WebKit framework, and other essential libraries. They are designed to address vulnerabilities quickly, especially those already being exploited by malicious actors.

To install the update, users should navigate to their device’s Settings > General > Software Update, where they can download and activate the patch.

Initially released earlier this week, the update was temporarily pulled after some users reported issues with websites crashing on Safari. Apple has since rectified the problem and is urging all users to proceed with the installation of version 16.5.1 (c) without delay.

By addressing this vulnerability promptly, Apple aims to safeguard users’ personal data and enhance overall device security.
