Lagos Speaker Renounces 2027 Guber Plans Amid Pressures On Seyi Tinubu To Run
Against the background of a campaign by some interest groups for Seyi Tinubu to contest the 2027 Lagos governorship election, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa who had been mentioned in the race has distanced himself for now the race.
Speaking on Thursday after Governor Sanwo-Olu presented the state’s 2025 budget of N3 trillion, Obasa dismissed claims linking him to the governorship contest. Instead, he reiterated his commitment to strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) through grassroots mobilization under The Mandate Movement (TMM).
“Becoming governor is secondary; it is something that I have not given serious consideration,” Obasa stated as he addressed allegations that his recent activities were part of a larger scheme to position himself as a candidate. He emphasized that TMM’s sole purpose is to support the APC and extend its reach across Lagos.
GWG.ng reports that the Speaker’s comments come amidst increasing speculation about Seyi Tinubu’s potential candidacy in 2027. While groups advocating for his bid have reportedly begun grassroots mobilization, opposition has also emerged, with some youths rejecting the idea of a political dynasty.
Obasa’s remarks sought to debunk rumors that he is leveraging local connections or familial ties to bolster a candidacy. “I am OBASA, and I do not need local validity to contest or run. If eventually I am contesting, I will do so from Agege,” he stated.
Despite widespread speculation, Obasa avoided directly addressing Seyi Tinubu’s rumored ambitions or his position on the matter. Instead, he called for unity within the APC and urged Nigerians to remain hopeful as President Bola Tinubu’s administration works toward economic recovery.
This strategic silence leaves the 2027 gubernatorial race in Lagos open to further intrigue, with political players carefully positioning themselves for what promises to be a highly competitive contest.
GWG.ng reports that despite the ongoing rumors and controversies, Seyi Tinubu is yet to release any official statement on whether he will be contesting for the highest political position in Lagos State in 2027 or not.
