FUGUS on Odoh's documents

The Federal University Gusau (FUGUS) has distanced itself from the professorship documents being circulated by Bernard Odoh, the recently dismissed Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Odoh, who was dismissed just weeks after his appointment, had become embroiled in controversies surrounding his recruitment and academic background.

Odoh had claimed that he was first appointed as a visiting professor at FUGUS in 2014 and was later promoted to a full professor in 2015. However, the management of FUGUS has strongly rejected these claims.

In a statement released on Thursday, FUGUS Registrar, Yakubu Anivbassa, denounced the documents being presented by Odoh as fraudulent.

The statement read, “The Federal University Gusau hereby states in clear and unambiguous terms that the so-called letters of tenure as professor and confirmation of promotion to the post of professor, dated 30th April 2015 and 12th November 2015, being paraded by Dr. Odoh Bernard Ifeanyi, and purported to be certified true copies hurriedly endorsed by Ibrahim Bawa Kaura, former Registrar of the Federal University, dated November 8, 2024, six years after the latter left the services of Federal University Gusau, are products of administrative fraud.”

FUGUS officials further explained that the fraud was carried out by Odoh in collaboration with the former Vice Chancellor and Registrar of the university. They emphasized that there is no official record of Odoh’s employment at FUGUS. “The impersonation and usurpation of the duties of the current Registrar of the university by the former Registrar, Ibrahim Bawa Kaura, who procured a fake stamp to certify Dr. Odoh’s equally fake employment documents as true copies on November 8, 2024, six years after his disengagement from the university,” the statement continued.

The university also pointed out that the certification of public documents must meet legal requirements, as outlined in Section 104 of the Evidence Act 2011. According to this law, for a document to be considered a certified true copy, it must be properly dated, signed by the issuing officer, and sealed. The FUGUS statement concluded that the documents presented by Odoh were not legally valid and did not meet these criteria.

Finally, FUGUS clarified that since Ibrahim Bawa Kaura had left the university in 2018, he had no authority to certify any official documents on behalf of the institution.
