Pep Guardiola cuts nose after draw

Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, frustrated after the draw with Feyenoord admitted to scratching his face and bruising his head with his own nails.

Feyenoord delivered a stunning comeback against Manchester City in the Champions League, recovering from a 3-0 deficit to draw 3-3 at the Etihad Stadium.

The match left City’s coach, Pep Guardiola, visibly marked with scratches on his face and head, as well as a small cut on his septum. During the post-match press conference, a journalist asked Guardiola about his injuries. “I cut myself using my fingers, my nails,” Guardiola explained, adding humorously, “He wanted to hurt me.”

The draw with Feyenoord marked a low point for Manchester City, who are struggling with form. They now have five defeats and one draw in their last six games. Their next Premier League match is against Liverpool. Guardiola recently extended his contract for two more years, but just two days after signing, City suffered a 4-0 defeat to Tottenham.

Analyzing the match against Feyenoord, Guardiola said, “With only three chances, they took the win away from us. It is hard to digest what happened. The game was good. We scored three goals and could have done more, but we gave away a goal. Because of our instability, they tied the game.” Reflecting on the result, he added, “What can we do? We were not able to control the last few minutes. We will rest for one or two days and prepare for Anfield. I understand why fans are disappointed. They come to see us win, so it’s normal they boo us after this.”

He admitted the season has been challenging, saying, “We will learn for the future. This has been, is, and will continue to be a difficult season. At times, it seems we are not strong enough. We must avoid making more mistakes.” Guardiola also spoke about the personal toll of the team’s struggles: “I am very disappointed. I feel as if we have lost. Feyenoord waited for us to lose control, and once they scored, the game opened up for them.”

Feyenoord’s coach, Brian Priske, expressed satisfaction with his team’s resilience against Manchester City. “The result is very important for us. We were losing 3-0 to Manchester City, who, for me, are the best team in the world. But we fought back with three goals at the end. We must be satisfied,” he said.

City’s collapse came after a dominant start. In the first half, Feyenoord created several scares, but Erling Haaland’s penalty in the 44th minute put City ahead. Early in the second half, Ilkay Gündogan volleyed home a goal from close range in the 50th minute, and Haaland added a third in the 53rd minute, converting a pass from Matheus Nunes. With a 3-0 lead over Feyenoord, Manchester City seemed set for an easy win.

However, the final 15 minutes turned into a nightmare for the English champions. An error by Josko Gvardiol allowed Anis Hadj-Moussa to score in the 75th minute. Seven minutes later, Santi Giménez tapped in a second goal, and David Hancko completed the dramatic comeback in the 88th minute after a counterattack led by Igor Paixao. Despite Haaland’s two goals, Manchester City could not secure the win against Feyenoord, adding to their ongoing struggles.
