Benin Salary Is Half Of Nigeria’s Offer – Gernot Rohr
The head coach of the Benin Republic national football team, Gernot Rohr, has made it clear that financial reasons were not behind his decision to take the job asserting that his present salary is half of what he earned as Nigeria’s manager. The former Super Eagles coach, who led Nigeria from 2016 to 2021, explained that he willingly accepted a significant pay cut to join the Benin Cheetahs.
While Rohr’s salary during his tenure with the Super Eagles was reported to be around $45,000 per month, his current salary with Benin is approximately $25,000 per month, a notable decrease. Despite the lower pay, Rohr emphasized that his decision was driven by a love for football and a desire to take on a new challenge.
“I was fortunate to have a long career of more than fifty years in professional football; I did not come for the money. I accepted half of my salary that I had in Nigeria. If I had come for the money, I would not have come,” Rohr said. He went on to explain that he saw the Benin job as an exciting opportunity for personal and professional growth, noting, “I came for an adventure, for a great project, in a friendly country, which I had already appreciated by coming to play there.”
Under Gernot Rohr’s guidance the Benin Republic team has successfully qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and he is now focused on helping them secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
