Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has sworn in three judges who were previously overlooked from inauguration by the immediate past governor of the state, Mr Godwin Obaseki.

The ceremony, held at the Festival Hall in Government House, marked a significant step in fulfilling a promise Okpebholo made during his inauguration to address the issue.

Speaking at the event, the governor highlighted the injustice faced by the judges, stating, “The National Judicial Council in June 2023 had recommended eight persons for appointment as Judges of the Edo State High Court. Eleven months after that recommendation, only five were sworn in by the immediate-past administration, leaving out three, even when they had all been cleared and recommended by the same NJC.”

He reiterated his commitment to fairness and inclusivity, saying, “For me, no one should be discriminated, marginalized, or hated for personal reasons, or on account of not having a godfather.”

The governor emphasized the critical role of the judiciary under the principle of separation of powers. He encouraged the new judges to uphold high standards, ensure fair dispute resolution, protect citizens’ rights, and deliver justice. “Today, we are gathered here to strengthen the role of the judiciary. These three judges will now have the opportunity to join their colleagues on the bench and serve as beacons of hope,” he added.

The newly sworn-in judges, Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe, expressed their gratitude to the governor. Speaking on behalf of the group, Justice Ojo Maureen Osa said, “We thank the governor for giving us this opportunity to serve as judges in Edo State.”

The ceremony reflects Okpebholo’s commitment to addressing past grievances and reinforcing the independence and efficiency of the state judiciary.
