Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, visited Chief Afe Babalola, a renowned legal icon and founder of Afe Babalola University, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The meeting took place in Babalola’s office and was held behind closed doors after Obi was warmly welcomed by one of Babalola’s aides.

The purpose of Obi’s visit was reportedly linked to the ongoing legal case against human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi. Sources revealed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo played a role in arranging the meeting to find a peaceful resolution to the matter.

After his discussion with Babalola, Obi proceeded to the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre, where Farotimi is being held. There, he spent time speaking with the detained lawyer. The visit to Farotimi was said to be a continuation of the earlier discussions with Babalola.

Farotimi had been arraigned on charges of defamation after allegations made in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. Among the claims, he accused Babalola of compromising the Supreme Court. His trial is set to continue at the Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti.

Additionally, the Inspector General of Police has filed a separate cybercrime suit against Farotimi in the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti. Though bail was granted at N50 million with conditions requiring a guarantor who owns property in Ekiti, his legal team is still working on fulfilling the requirements.
