BREAKING: Court Shocks With Bail Ruling On Yahaya Bello
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has turned down the bail application submitted by Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State.
GWG.ng reports that the court, presided over by Justice Maryann Anenih struck out Bello’s bail application on Tuesday morning.
The judge ruled that the application was filed before the former governor had been taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The bail request was submitted on November 22, 2024, but Yahaya Bello was only taken into EFCC custody on November 26 and subsequently arraigned on November 27, 2024.
GWG.ng reports that the ruling will shock many given the fact that nearly all governors arrested in the past were given bail by the courts. The refusal of the bail application will also be considered against the background of the ongoing trial of civil rights activist, Dele Farotimi who was handcuffed in court on Monday. The scene was compared to the court appearance of Yahaya Bello who was not put in handcuff over the allegation of laundering about N80 billionn.
Some analysts are likely to assert that the bail refusal may be a way of cooling public angst against the justice system and that Yahaya Bello is not being favoured.
More updates will follow as the case progresses.
