Rep. Mohammed El-Rufai, the son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, put aside political differences on Tuesday to commend Comrade Shehu Sani for his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.

Speaking at an event organized by the National Assembly Legislative Forum (NASSLAF) in Abuja, which focused on the theme “Role of Legislative Aides in National Development,” El-Rufai also praised other key figures such as the late Gani Fawehinmi, Femi Falana, and other patriots who have played significant roles in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

During his speech, El-Rufai specifically acknowledged Senator Shehu Sani, who had represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Assembly, as well as Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State.

El-Rufai referred to Shehu Sani as a “father” and praised his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy. He also remarked that despite the political differences between Shehu Sani and his father, even Sani’s critics cannot deny his consistent efforts to advocate for the rights of workers, aligning with the ideologies of the late Gani Fawehinmi and Femi Falana.

El-Rufai also highlighted the importance of legislative aides in the lawmaking process and emphasized that their role should not be underestimated.

He praised Shehu Sani and Governor Uba Sani for taking good care of their legislative aides during their time as senators, ensuring that the people of their constituencies received the benefits of democracy.

He expressed his intent to follow their example in the future.

In his keynote address, Shehu Sani commended El-Rufai for his effective representation of the Kaduna North Federal Constituency. He spoke on the need for an independent legislature, emphasizing the critical role of legislative aides in ensuring effective representation. Sani urged aides to provide their principals with accurate information about the state of the nation and reminded lawmakers of their duty to put the country’s interests above personal gains.

Sani further stressed the importance of a strong, independent legislature in ensuring good governance and the protection of democracy. He recalled times when heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) were unable to ignore legislative summons, underscoring the weight of legislative oversight.

He concluded by advising lawmakers to prioritize their constitutional duties over personal interests to maintain the integrity of the legislative process and contribute to Nigeria’s development.
