Social Media Explodes Over Alleged Death Sentence For Stealing Fowl
By Benjamin Abioye
The news that a then 17-year-old man from Osun State was sentenced to death by hanging for stealing a fowl has sparked widespread outrage and concern across the internet.
The story of this harsh punishment has gone viral, with many questioning the severity of the sentence given the nature of the crime.
Social media has been flooded with strong reactions over the claim.
@AcedTips expressed disbelief, saying, “What did I just watch? 14 good years! This got me teary. The good people of Osun state, don’t let this happen. 💔” Many people are heartbroken, unable to comprehend the length of the sentence. @KoladeKayode shared the sentiment, posting, “Sad! 😢😢😢😢😢”.
Others, like @Frank ✮, questioned the fairness of the punishment, commenting, “For stealing fowl ah ah.” @D☰ΠZί 🌙 speculated that the actions of the former governor, under the APC party, might have played a role, stating, “It must be the former governor of Osun state, under the APC party. This occurred, not the current.”
Some have called for judicial reform. @flourish007 wrote, “Our country needs true REFORM. Evil people all over the place. OMG.” @SmaAfc criticized the judicial system, stating, “Our judicial system doesn’t know what they call sentencing guidelines, statutory of limitations. We have a long way to go in this country.” Many users are also questioning the competence of the judge in this case. @Aneetarh™ tweeted, “My goodness 💔😱,” while @Obinna Nwosu (Tryce) commented, “Thank God this one came to light. So many young, innocent young wasting away in prisons across the country because Nigerian Police happened to them.”
The reaction has been particularly intense, with people pointing out the inconsistencies in the justice system. @AbatanSamson wrote, “This is unbelievable! Death sentence for stealing a chicken? When yahyah bello that stole over N100b was granted bail. This is ridiculous!” Many are expressing frustration with a system that seems to impose harsh punishment for minor crimes while allowing major corruption to go unchecked.
As the conversation continues, many are demanding justice and reforms, with @SmaAfc adding, “The judge should be jailed.” Some are even questioning the role of the legal system, with @MarcObitex1 asking, “Is this a Yoruba movie or skit? I can’t just believe what I just watched.”
Amidst the outcry, @Walex33212695 turned to prayer, saying, “God Almighty will intervene💔. Help will come from above in Jesus Christ name 🙏.”
As the case continues to unfold, the internet remains a platform for many to voice their concerns and demand a fairer, more compassionate legal system in Nigeria.
