Prices Of Cooking Ingredients Skyrocket In Nigeria Ahead Of Yuletide
As the Christmas and New Year festivities approach, the prices of essential cooking ingredients have soared, leaving many in Nigeria grappling with skyrocketing food prices.
Markets across major cities, including Ibadan and Lagos and some other towns across Nigeria are witnessing steep hikes in the prices of onions, tomatoes, and fresh peppers and other cooking ingredients, staples in most households.
In Ibadan markets, a single small-sized onion now costs as much as ₦200, a significant increase from previous weeks. Tomatoes and fresh peppers have also seen dramatic price surges, with a small portion of tomatoes selling for ₦500.
The situation is even more dire in Lagos. In the Agege area, four medium-sized onions are being sold at prices ranging from ₦1,500 to ₦2,000, prompting frustration among residents who are already struggling with inflation and the rising cost of living.
Market vendors attribute the price hikes to multiple factors, including increased transportation costs, seasonal demand, and disruptions in the supply chain. With onions, tomatoes, and peppers being indispensable for preparing festive meals, many households are now forced to reassess their budgets during the holiday season.
For now, many in Nigeria are left wondering how to balance tradition and celebration amidst these escalating costs of cooking ingredients.
