Why Davido Is My Favourite ‘Gospel’ Artiste – Controversial Pastor (Video)

Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, the founder of the Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church, commonly known as SPAC Nation, has stirred conversations online by describing Nigerian music star Davido as a gospel artiste.

The statement, made during an appearance on the Off The Record podcast, began trending on Monday. Pastor Adegboyega explained his perspective, saying that “gospel” simply means “good news,” a quality he believes Davido exemplifies in his music.

Citing Davido’s hit song Stand Strong as an example, Adegboyega remarked, “Gospel means good news. Everyone there is a gospel artist. Davido is a gospel artiste. Have you heard: ‘Because I stand strong?’”

This came as part of his response to criticism over his recent birthday celebration, which featured performances by secular musicians rather than gospel artistes.

Defending his choice of performers, Adegboyega revealed that his close friends, including artistes like Davido and Zlatan, voluntarily performed at the event without payment. He explained, “What I had then was my friends—friends who are there through thick and thin. Davido told me: ‘I just want to be there and perform for one hour.’ They love me, and I will always give my friends platforms.”

Addressing criticisms from gospel artistes, Adegboyega questioned their judgmental attitudes. “If gospel artistes aren’t my friends and instead join the bandwagon to criticize me, asking, ‘Is that a church?’ What should I do? Drag them with a rope?”

He also shared his close relationship with Zlatan, describing the artiste as a “son” and highlighting the familial bond he shares with his parents and children.

The pastor emphasized that his events will always feature his close circle of friends, saying, “My friends will always sing at my events, and the next one will be bigger because my circle of friends keeps growing.”
