Lekki Mosque’s ‘Jesus Not God’ Banner: CAN Reacts

CAN Lekki Mosque Banner

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has spoken out about the recent display of a banner that read, “Jesus Christ is not God,” at a mosque in Lekki, Lagos. The association referred to the incident as trivial and unworthy of attention.

The banner had drawn significant attention on social media, with many perceiving it as an intentional attempt to provoke Christians. Following public backlash, the banner was replaced with another reading, “Allah is the lord of Jesus.”

A representative of CAN, when asked about the issue, dismissed it as irrelevant. “CAN does not engage in petty or irritating matters. Whoever is behind the banner is responsible for their actions under the law,” he said. He emphasized that it is the duty of law enforcement to address situations that could disturb public peace.

The representative suggested that the individuals behind the banner might have been funded to stir tension. “Sometimes, people or groups are used to annoy Christians, hoping to provoke them into a reaction. If we sense such intent, we report it to the appropriate authorities. However, some things are too foolish to warrant a response,” he explained.

He recalled a similar incident earlier in the year when a government agency made a controversial statement about Jesus. CAN responded strongly to that incident, as it came from an official body. “We felt it was a deliberate insult. It is something they wouldn’t dare say about other religions,” he stated.

The CAN official also expressed concerns about external forces trying to destabilize the country. “Many of these actions are funded by groups linked to troublemakers or terrorists. Their goal is to create unrest and distract the government,” he warned.

He urged journalists to investigate the true intentions behind such acts, noting that religious groups in Nigeria generally maintain respectful relationships with one another.
