Proposal graduate girlfriend

A young man’s heartfelt proposal to his girlfriend on the day of her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Passing Out Parade (POP) took an unexpected turn, leaving him devastated.

David, a barber from Calabar, had traveled all the way to Ibadan to make the proposal to his girlfriend, whom he had supported throughout her education as she was passing out of the NYSC Service. The young lady, however, was not prepared for this moment and turned him down in front of her friends, leaving David crushed.

David’s proposal at the NYSC POP was not just a spontaneous gesture—it was the culmination of years of sacrifice to his girlfriend. “I’m here to tell you that I love you and I want to marry you,” he said, kneeling with an engagement ring in hand. “I’ve waited so long for this day.”

But his girlfriend, shocked by his sudden proposal on her NYSC big day, responded with disbelief. “David, what’s the meaning of this? All the way from Calabar, what are you doing here?” she asked, clearly not expecting a proposal on such a significant day. When David explained his feelings, she bluntly rejected him. “How? How is it possible? You are a barber,” she said, “Five years in university, one year for NYSC, all just to pass out and come and marry a barber? What will my parents say? What will my people say?”

David, in an attempt to justify his actions, reminded her of the sacrifices he made for her. “Have you forgotten I’m the one that sponsored you through school? On the day you gained admission, I was even the one that gave you the school fees,” he said.

Despite his heartfelt words, the young lady was unmoved. “I’m very grateful,” she said, acknowledging his contributions. “Thank you for sponsoring me through school, for paying my house rent, for paying my bills, and everything. But that’s not enough reason for me to marry you.”

David, visibly hurt by her rejection, pleaded for understanding. “I gave up my education for you. You are doing this to me.”

But the young lady remained firm in her decision. “Look at your ring,” she said, dismissively referring to the engagement ring. “Your mates are giving diamond ring.” Her tone showed no remorse as she demanded, “If you want your money back, you say it. Give me one year and I’m going to refund it to you. Don’t ever come and embarrass me like this again.”

This public rejection of the proposal by the girlfriend in front of her NYSC colleagues has sparked a wave of debate online, with many sympathizing with David’s disappointment. Some criticized the young lady for her cold response, arguing that she lacked empathy for the man who had supported her throughout her education. Others, however, pointed out that sponsoring a woman through school does not entitle someone to a marriage proposal, particularly if the relationship has changed over time.

The incident highlights the growing tension in relationships where one partner financially supports the other, with some young men expressing frustration over being let down after investing so much into their partner’s education and well-being. For David, this proposal was not just about love, but about years of sacrifice—and the painful reality of unreciprocated expectations.
