Nigeria’s ambition to achieve 70% broadband penetration by 2025 appears under threat, as the latest data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reveals a penetration rate of just 41.56% as of September 2024.

NCC Data Shows Shortfall

The figure marks a slight increase from August’s 41.01% but underscores a downward trend compared to earlier months. Broadband penetration was recorded at 43.53% in March and peaked at 44.04% in July, showing a gradual decline in subsequent months. Broadband subscriptions in September stood at 90,102,835, a notable drop from 93,567,464 in August.

Despite this dip, mobile internet subscriptions reached a new high of 132.4 million in September, up from 130.9 million in August, highlighting the mixed progress in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

Concerns Over Achieving 2025 Target

Industry experts are increasingly skeptical about Nigeria’s ability to meet its broadband target within the next year. They cite inconsistent implementation of the National Broadband Plan and infrastructure deficits as major hurdles

Government Steps Up Infrastructure Investment

To bridge the gap, the government has ramped up digital infrastructure projects, including a 90,000-kilometer fiber optic initiative supported by the World Bank. This effort aims to enhance broadband access nationwide and accelerate the country’s digital transformation

While these investments signal progress, stakeholders emphasize the need for urgent measures to reverse the decline and meet the ambitious broadband target set for December 2025.
