Lagos Teacher Assault Bail Granted

A Lagos teacher, Stella Nwadigo, from Christ-Mitots International School in Ikorodu, appeared before an Ogba Magistrate Court on Thursday for allegedly assaulting a three-year-old pupil, Abayomi Michael.

The incident, captured in a viral video, showed Nwadigo repeatedly slapping the child during a lesson. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed Nwadigo’s arrest and arraignment in court.

“Following the ongoing viral case of child abuse, all concerned parties appeared today, 9th January 2024, at the Ogba Magistrate Court. Two charges were read to the suspect, to which she pled not guilty.”

During the court proceedings, Nwadigo’s defense counsel applied for bail, which was granted at ₦200,000 with two verifiable sureties. However, Nwadigo was remanded in a correctional facility by the court pending the fulfillment of bail conditions. The trial is scheduled for 18th January 2024.

The incident sparked public outrage after the video surfaced online, with widespread calls for stricter penalties against teachers involved in child abuse. The school management immediately suspended Nwadigo and condemned her actions as inconsistent with their core values. In a statement, the school reaffirmed its commitment to student safety and announced measures to prevent future occurrences, including mandatory training for teachers on child protection and positive disciplinary methods.

The Lagos State Government and relevant authorities have pledged to ensure justice in the case and enforce stronger child protection measures across schools.
