Police To Enforce Motor Vehicle Insurance From February – IGP
By Benjamin Abioye
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced that the police will begin enforcing compulsory third-party vehicle insurance across the country starting February 1, 2025.
This announcement was made during a meeting with the Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, and his team from the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters. According to a statement from the police, the IGP urged all vehicle owners to adhere to the legal requirements for third-party insurance.
“The IGP affirmed the importance of third-party insurance and declared February 1, 2025, as the start date for enforcing the relevant laws,” the statement said. He emphasized that Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act require all vehicle owners to have third-party insurance before using public roads. Violators of these laws, he warned, could face fines, imprisonment, or both.
Egbetokun assured that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to working with all government agencies and private organizations to prioritize the protection of lives and property.
Earlier in the meeting, the Commissioner for Insurance had requested the police’s cooperation in implementing the compulsory insurance nationwide. He highlighted that this type of insurance provides significant benefits to all road users and ensures compliance with legal standards. The Commissioner also congratulated the IGP on key accomplishments, including establishing the Police Insurance Bank Limited.
The NAICOM team present at the meeting included senior officials, who reiterated the importance of police support in enforcing the insurance laws effectively.
