PDP Pulls Out Of Ondo LG Elections Just Days Before Vote
By Benjamin Abioye
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has officially announced its withdrawal from the upcoming Local Government (LG) election scheduled for Saturday, January 18, 2025.
The elections will take place across the 18 local government areas of the state, as confirmed by the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC).
In a statement released on Thursday in Akure, Mr. Leye Igbabo, the PDP Director of Media and Publicity, explained that the decision was reached after extensive consultations with party leaders, stakeholders, and the national secretariat of the party. “This decision is a product of several layers of consultations of party leaders, stakeholders and the national secretariat of our great party,” the statement said.
The PDP had initially fielded 15 chairmanship candidates and 131 councillorship candidates for the election. However, the party expressed growing concerns over the fairness of the electoral process. “From all indications, ODIEC’s credibility, transparency, and impartiality have failed the integrity test,” the statement continued. It pointed to disturbing reports suggesting double standards by ODIEC, which raised doubts about the fairness of the election process.
The PDP emphasized its commitment to democracy and the rule of law but stated that it could not, in good conscience, participate in an election it deemed compromised. “The party cannot, in good conscience, confer legitimacy on a compromised process by participating in the election,” the statement added. “We have, therefore, resolved to withdraw our participation in this exercise to uphold the integrity of our party and our unwavering belief in credible electoral practices.”
In a follow-up, Dr. Bakitta Bello, the PDP Chairman in Ondo State, confirmed the party’s withdrawal from the elections when speaking to reporters on the phone. The party reaffirmed its dedication to promoting transparent and fair elections in the future.
