Tribunal Asked To Stop Buhari From Second Term Inauguration

The Presidential Election Tribunal has been asked to stop the inauguration of Muhammadu Buhari for a second term on the premise that going ahead with the inauguration.

The petition was filed by the Hope Democratic Party, HDP and its candidate in the last presidential election, Chief Ambrose Owuru. Owuru polled a total of 1,663 votes in the election conducted on February 23.

HDP which is asking the tribunal to nullify the election in its petition marked as CA/PEPC/001/2019 contends that going ahead with the inauguration would make its case that the election was rigged immaterial.

In the motion, the applicant averred that in the spite of the pending case that Buhari has been making effort to conduct an inauguration which he submitted if allowed to hold would make his application useless.

The applicants are thus asking the tribunal to restrain Buhari from presenting himself “for swearing in or inauguration ceremony or taking the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of office as the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, pending the determination of this petition and the question as to whether he has been validly elected as challenged and pending before the court.”

The tribunal is to give its judgment on May 22, seven days before the scheduled second term inauguration.
