Workers protest Meranda Removal

Tension rose at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday as legislative workers protested against alleged plans to remove Mojisola Meranda from her position as Speaker.

The workers confronted operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), who had arrived early in the morning and sealed off Meranda’s office, as well as the offices of her deputy and the clerk.

Security forces had taken control of the complex in Alausa, Ikeja, which caused unease among lawmakers and workers. The unrest follows the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker on January 13, after allegations of corruption and abuse of office. Obasa has since challenged his removal in court, naming the Lagos State House of Assembly and Speaker Meranda as defendants.

With reports suggesting Obasa’s possible return to the position, the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in the state remains divided. The party’s highest decision-making body, the GAC, recently held a marathon meeting to discuss the issue.

When Meranda arrived at the assembly complex around 11:15 a.m., legislative workers showed their support by chanting “Meranda we want!” The Speaker, visibly emotional, was escorted by her security team through the tense atmosphere. Inside the chamber, DSS officials dressed in black jackets and helmets clashed with the workers at the door, resulting in a chaotic scene.
