By Ella Makondo, Lafia
Worried by the infections of COVID- 19 which has swept the Benue State University Community leaving many of its principal officers infected, a Professor of History at the Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State , Professor Okpeh Okpeh has blamed both the Federal and state governments for not ensuring strict enforcement of the COVID-19 protocols.
Okpeh who is also the President, Historical Society of Nigeria ( HSN) expressed his worries in an Interview with our Correspondent in Lafia on Monday.
According to him, it has became necessary for Government at all levels to tighten up their belts and ensure strict enforcement of the preventive regulations given by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, ( NCDC) in order to prevent further spread of the virus in Nigeria.
He said that the continuous increase in the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 was as a result of doubts amongst people regarding the existence of the novel COVID -19, noting that there was little or no respect for the preventive regulations given by NCDC and the state governments for the preventive of the spread of the virus.
” The mode of transmission of this virus has challenged the basis of our humanity and the difficulties this has continued to pose.”
” Recent studies have revealed that asymptotic persons amongst are more than those with the virus .These category of people keep mingling and interacting with those who don’t have and in the process, the virus keeps spreading.”
” Our normal way of living and the difficulties associated with the control of this virus is what has become very difficult for people. For example, the no handshaking , no touching of the face and no mingling and so on are rather very difficult and abnormal ways of doing things for most people.”
“So many people find themselves violating these regulations repeatedly and unknowingly passing the virus from person to person. We were also unable to enforce the lockdown curfew imposed in various states of the federation because people needed to go out to survive this virus.”
” Many people trooped out, inducing those infected, so also did the virus spread across the states. This is a serious challenge to the fight against COVID-19 in the country.” Okpeh said.
He therefore called on relevant authorities to ensure that individuals comply with the guidelines of health experts in order to prevent further spread of the pandemic.
