How Chelsea Beat Man U In FA Cup Semi-Final
By Ekene Dike
Manchester United and Chelsea renewed their old rivalry at Wembley Stadium as Chelsea ended up as the victors in the fiercely contested FA Cup Semi Final.
It was a story of hero turned villain for Manchester United’s number one goal keeper David De Gea.
Costly errors for the goal keeper were helpful for the winning side as they cruised to 3-1 victory and into the final to set up an encounter with Arsenal.
The Spanish shots-stopper made an unforgivable goalkeeping blunder for the first goal, much to the delight of Olivier Giroud before the end of the first half.
The second half began on the wrong end for De Gea again. Once again, he failed to deal with a weak attempt from Mason Mount and watched the ball crawl into the net. His two errors leading to the first two goals gave Chelsea the momentum to win the game.
Frank Lampard’s side didn’t fail to capitalize on the vulnerability of the Red Devils as Marcos Alonso’s cross into the box deflected past Harry Maguire, hit De Gea and found it’s way into the back of the net for the third goal.
Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty late in the game, after Hudson Odoi’s clumsy challenge on Anthony Martial. That was more of a goal for pride than a consolation goal.
At that point, it was already game over for United who will have to continue their quest for European football against West Ham in the Premier League. For Chelsea, they have the chance to win a trophy this season.
Manchester United had defeated Chelsea thrice entering into the game on Sunday. Twice in the Premier League and once in the Capital One Cup. This was a perfect way to revenge for Chelsea as the three goals seemed to represent the three times they lost to the Red Devils this season.
