The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has come under severe attack by social media critics for hiking the fine for hate speech to N5 million.

A controversy had ensued between the management and Board of the National Broadcasting Commission( NBS) which worsened with the board distancing itself from the 6th review edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code .

In a press conference held on Thursday in Abuja , the board said that it was not sought or consulted in making the amendment. The board alleged that Alhaji Mohammed singlehandedly spearheaded the new amendment, describing it as strange in the history of the nation’s broadcast industry.

According to the chairman of the NBC, Ikra Bilbis , the Minister’s version of the revised code did not meet any known criteria of due process and inclusiveness of stakeholders.

Thus, many social media users have reacted to the action of the Minister, criticising him for singlehandedly deciding for a country with such a large population .

They compared the gravity of the offence of hate speech to that of corruption , stealing , killings , insecurity among other atrocities committed against Nigerians, while calling on the Nigeria media , Civil Society Organisations among others to condemn the repressive attempt to silence the media.
