Speaker: Gbajabiamila Crushes Bago
In his second attempt Femi Gbajabiamila on Tuesday succeeded in his bid to become Speaker of the House of Representatives triumphing over fellow party member, Mohammed Bago.
Gbajabiamila, who served as the All Progressives Congress, APC leader in the 8th House was pushed to success on the strength of the strong endorsement received from his party, the presidency and elements in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
A last minute endorsement of Bago by the PDP failed to give him a momentum despite issues of impropriety that were brought up to challenge Gbajabiamila’s bid for the position.
In the vote for Speaker conducted by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Gbajabiamila scored a total of 283 votes to defeat Bago who scored 76 votes.
It is Gbajabiamila’s second bid for the office having narrowly lost in his first attempt to Yakubu Dogara in 2015.
