It is Nigeria’s great loss that Moshood Abiola never had opportunity to exercise political power because he would have fundamentally changed the future trajectory of the country his running mate in the June 12, 1993 election has said.

Speaking in a rare interview, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe said that Nigeria would definitely not have been in its present position if the annulment of the June 12 election had not taken place.

Kingibe broke his silence on the June 12 imbroglio in an interview on NTA’s One On One conducted by Cyril Stober and monitored by GreenWhiteGreen in Lagos.

Following the annulment of the June 12 election and the ascension of General Sani Abacha to power, Abiola was put in custody for four years during which time Kingibe served as minister of interior among other positions in the Abacha regime.

However, breaking his silence, Kingibe said that Abiola’s great passion and programmes for Nigeria would have changed the trajectory of the nation and that the country would not have been in its sorry position if Abiola had exercised power.

“My regret frankly was that we were not able to actualize it. Many people didn’t know Chief Abiola well. But I knew him well. I knew him before we joined forces in politics.

“It is Nigeria’s loss that we never had a President Abiola in power. He had great passion, great ideas, great vision for this country and for the people. He had aspirations drawn from his own background of so to speak from grass to grace.

“That I regret. I regret for my country, I regret for my people. We would not be where we are if he had been given the chance to shape the trajectory for Nigeria’s future, I regret that. But we move on.”
