The Benin Solidarity Movement (BSM) has faulted the plans of the Federal Government to create RUGA Fulani settlements across the federation, stressing that the move is illegal and unconstitutional.

The group, in a statement issued on Thursday, signed by its President, Comrade Curtis Eghosa Ugbo, noted that acquisition of lands for herdsmen across the country for the purpose of cattle rearing should not be the interest of the Federal Government, rather a private affair.

It, however, warned the Federal Government that the plan will be resisted by the Edo People, adding that acquiring lands for Fulani settlements will negatively affect original inhabitants of such lands.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria has no locus standi to acquire lands for Fulani herders because it is illegal and unconstitutional for the Federal Government to be involved in such obnoxious act of forcefully taking lands belonging to any ethnic group to another ethnic group without due process and consultations with the affected land owners.

“The Federal Government earlier came with the cattle colony and was rejected by the Nigerians and now it is RUGA, what is the meaning of RUGA? What is the interest of the federal government in cattle business in Nigeria? Is that the business that now gives federal government foreign currency?
