Suicides: Senator Okorocha Wants Creation Of Federal Ministry Of Happiness
By Rufus Ike
Senator Rochas Okorocha has called for the creation of a Federal Ministry or Department of Happiness as a response to the increasing rate of suicides in the country.
He made his call as the Senate on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to ban the distribution of sniper which has been the chemical of choice for Nigerians committing suicide.
The motion was brought to the Senate floor by Senator Theodore Orji, PDP, Abia Central who expressed concern about the increasing number of Nigerians taking their lives.
He thus asked for proactive measures to stop the trend especially from family and other support groups.
It was while contributing to the motion that Senator Okorocha, the immediate past governor of Imo State who caused amusement in many quarters when he created the Ministry of Happiness while in office called for a federal department or ministry of Happiness.
“When I did create the ministry of happiness in Imo State it was perhaps the most misunderstood ministry but the most successful ministry in Imo State. If we do not address the happiness of our people it would be very unfortunate,” he said as he called for the creation of a Federal Ministry or Department of Happiness.
