Key Facts From Manchester United’s 9-0 Thrashing Of Southampton
By Ekene Dike
After three winless games, Manchester United rediscovered their winning touch in ruthless fashion as they battered Southampton 9-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday night. Southampton also saw two of their players sent off.
Within two minutes, a reckless challenge by Alex Jankeweitz on Scott McTominay resulted into a red card. It was a catastrophic phenomenon for the 19-year-old on his first Premier League start. Later on, Jad Bedranek joined Jankeweitz on the red card list four minutes before the referee’s final whistle.
Aaron Wan Bissaka opened the scoring from a Luke Shaw cross in the 18th minute. Marcus Rashford added a second, Jan Bedinak scored an own goal and Edinson Cavani nodded into the net for United’s fourth as Luke Shaw delivered another accurate cross. At halftime, the Red Devils were irrepressible, irresistible and commanding.
Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s mentees added five in the second half as Anthony Martial bagged a brace, while Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Daniel James completed the rout as Manchester United went level on points with Manchester City at the summit of the table.
However, these were key facts from the game:
- Manchester United had seven different scorers on the night (excluding own goals), only the second time a team has had seven different scorers in a Premier League match, after Chelsea vs Aston Villa in December 2012.
- This was only the third time ever a side has won a Premier League game by 9+ goals; Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town (1995), Southampton 0-9 Leicester City(2019), Manchester United 9-0 Southampton(2021).
- Only Eric Cantona and Dimitri Payet (both 33 games) have assisted 15 Premier League goals in fewer appearances than Bruno Fernandes, with Tuesday night his 36th appearance in the competition.
- Manchester United have scored six goals in a Premier League match for a second time this season (also 6-2 vs Leeds); it’s the first time they’ve hit 6+ goals twice in a season since 2000/01 (vs Bradford and Arsenal).
- Luke Shaw has as many Premier League assists in the first half against Southampton as he managed in his previous 45 Premier League appearances (2).
- Manchester United have scored four goals in the first half of a Premier League game for the second time this season, also doing so against Leeds. It’s the first time they’ve scored 4+ goals in the first half of two games in a season since 1997/98 under Sir Alex Ferguson.
- Southampton are the first team to have a player sent off and score an own goal in a Premier League game against Manchester United at Old Trafford since Sunderland in October 2009.
- Only Mohamed Salah (21) and Harry Kane (19) have more goals in all competitions for a Premier League club than Marcus Rashford this season (16).
