Hours after Alhaji Lai Mohammed was inaugurated as a minister for the second time he was immediately thrown into a political crisis as the crisis of confidence between him and Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State degenerated to another low.

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC from the minister’s political base in Kwara South on Wednesday at a meeting in the residence of a party elder, Chief J. B. Ayeni lambasted the state executive committee of the party for allegedly disrespecting the governor.

The APC state executive committee is in the hands of Alhaji Mohammed who led the O`to ge revolution that brought the governor to power.

However, since the emergence of Abdulrazaq as a candidate there has been apprehension among his supporters over perceptions that the minister may not have supported his emergence.

It has also been alleged that the governor did not back the return of Mohammed as minister representing the state. The governor has also been accused of working to build a rival party structure around his deputy who is also from Kwara South as a rival to the state structure erected by Mohammed.

In the latest development, the Kwara State executive of the party was said to have expressed concern over the governor’s trip outside the country during the recent Sallah break, apparent refusal to disburse Sallah gifts to party members and even more, the delay in the constitution of the cabinet.

But responding to the beef of the party executive which is loyal to Alhaji Lai Mohammed, a group of supporters of the governor who met in the residence of Chief Ayeni lambasted the party executive for their alleged disrespect to the governor.

Among those who were at the meeting were Senator Bisi Oyewo, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, Asiwaju M.T.Lawal, Hon Dele Shittu and Prince Shuaib Olarewaju.

In a four-point communique released after the meeting of the party elders, they gave a rousing endorsement of the governor and distanced themselves  “from the unruly behaviour of the State APC Executives as demonstrated in their meeting with His Excellency few days ago which we feel is a flagrant disrespect to His Excellency as the constitutionally recognised Leader of our Party.”

They thus enjoined the governor not to be distracted by “the antics of the State Executives and some individuals in Kwara South Senatorial District.”
