Leading Peoples Democratic Party, PDP governorship aspirant, Chief Fred Majemite has said that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa was right on the claim that there existed no zoning agreement among the three senatorial districts in the state.

Majemite in an interview, however, said that the convention of zoning made it imperative that Delta Central should produce the next governor of the state.

Majemite spoke against the background of earlier assertions by Governor Okowa that there was no fundamental agreement on zoning among the three senatorial zones.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Dr. Okowa’s assertion has made political leaders in Delta Central to lobby other senatorial zones to cede the 2023 ticket to the region.

Asked of his comment on the zoning question as claimed by Governor Okowa in an interview with The Nation, Majemite said:

“Actually, the governor is right because there was never a time the three senatorial districts sat, wrote and signed any written agreement on rotation. But, there is an understanding that it should go round and that is what has been keeping the party as one big family till date. This does not mean that other senatorial districts should not indicate interest during the primary.”

“Nevertheless, the convention has been to favour the senatorial district that the ticket is zoned to eventually. If you recall, Delta Central took the first shot, followed by Delta South and then Delta North. From inception, aspirants from other senatorial districts indicated an interest in the ticket but, at the end of the day, the party knows the district that would produce the governor.”

Majemite as such said that Okowa was right on the issue of zoning in Delta.

“So, the governor is right in saying that there is no formal or written agreement; it is just an understanding among the stakeholders. Nevertheless, I believe the governor was quoted out of context because he was quoted to have said that there is no written agreement and that only God knows who will take over from him.”

“Furthermore, he is also right in saying that he does not know who will take over from him. During the primary that produced Okowa as the candidate, there were aspirants from both Delta South and Delta Central. But, in the end, he emerged as the flag bearer. So, you can see that it boils down to the same rotation and understanding.”
