Anambra: Voting Commences As Kidnappers Keep Candidate In Custody

Accreditation and voting in the Anambra State governorship election has commenced in many sections of the state amid tight security and encouraging turnout of voters. However, one of the 18 candidates in the election, Mr  Obiora Agbasimalo, the candidate of Labour Party remains in the custody of kidnappers who took him away last September.

 GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that accreditation for the election is being conducted through the newly introduced Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS which combines two modes of voter verification; fingerprint and face biometrics for voter’s identity verification.

Voting has also commenced in Awka South

Under the new dispensation, incident forms will no longer be used according to officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Meanwhile, accreditation of voters to choose the next governor of Anambra State with 18 candidates are partaking in the election though one of them is not expected to vote having been in the custody of kidnappers since September.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG also reports that voting has commenced in some areas of Anambra state, Awka South inclusive, but not everywhere. In Anaocha Local Government Area, polling officials were as at 9.20 a.m. yet to arrive at some polling stations despite the presence of voters and other stakeholders.

The other candidates partaking are: The candidates are a former governor of the  Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA); Senator Andy Uba, All Progressives Congress (APC); Valentine Ozigbo, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Ifeanyi Uba, Young Progressives Party (YPP); Godwin Maduka, Accord Party (AP); Etiaba Chukwuogo, Action Alliance (AA).

Others are Nwankwo Chidozie, African Action Congress (AAC); Onyejegbu Okwudili, Allied Peoples Movement (APM); Ohajimkpo Emeka, New Nigeria Peoples Party; Ezenwafor Victor, National Rescue Movement (NRM); Nnamdi Nwawuo, Peoples Redemption Party (PRP); Uzo Godwin, Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Okonkwo Francis, Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

Despite the absence of its candidate, the Labour Party has called on its supporters to vote for its candidate even if he is with kidnappers.
