Saraki Intervenes To Give Kwara PDP Ticket To Atunwa

Senate President Bukola Saraki is intervening in the Kwara State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP governorship contest after the contest turned violent on Sunday evening.

Saraki who deliberately stayed away from the contest that associates described as a family affair mainly between former minister of sports, Bolaji Abdullahi and former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Razak Atunwa had to rush to Ilorin on Sunday night to arbitrate over the issue.

It was gathered that based on considerations including the fact that Abdullahi and himself are from the same local government area, that on the principle of rotation that the Saraki family may have decided to pass the baton to Atunwa who is from Asa Local Government Area.

The aspiration of others like Zakari Mohammed from Kwara North Senatorial District was jettisoned based on fears that the All Progressives Congress, APC would field a candidate from Kwara Central where the bulk of the votes comes from.

Explaining why Saraki had to intervene in a press statement issued on Monday morning, his spokesman, Yusuph Olaniyonu said:

“It is important to note that despite his influence in the politics of the state, Dr. Saraki has always worked to ensure that the democratic process is followed to the letter. Additionally, as many of his political associates are aspiring to become the next Governor of the State, he has maintained that he will allow the people to decide and worked to ensure that the party primaries in the state remain credible.

“That was why he stayed back in Abuja while the primariy election in Ilorin was on-going. He only left Abuja for Ilorin at 9.10pm yesterday following the news of the disruption.”

The primary which was aborted on Sunday night because of violence is set to resume later on Monday with Atunwa picking the ticket.
