Some retired generals in the country with the determination to ensure that a new ease of life is enthroned in the country reportedly worked to stop Governor Nyesom Wike’s plot of enthroning his favoured candidate, Governor Aminu Tambuwal as presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The retired generals who believe that Atiku is the best option to stop President Muhammadu Buhari it was gathered worked to convince other PDP governors not to buy into Wike’s scheme. The generals were largely successful as the governors refused to heed Wike’s scheme.

On the day of the convention, the generals also ensured that the PDP governors did not reach a consensus on supporting Tambuwal as they helped to convince them to allow their delegates vote according to their preferences. Atiku was the prefernce for many of the delegates.

www.gwgng.com had last month reported on a private meeting among the generals and influential northern power brokers where the decision was taken to back Atiku at the PDP convention. https://gwg.ng/news/headline-stories/northern-power-brokers-push-for-atiku-to-reconcile-him-with-obasanjo/

There were indications yesterday that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who had in the past opposed Atiku would have no choice than to back Atiku given his firm disapproval of Buhari’s competence and capacity.

At the end of the counting of votes on Sunday afternoon, Atiku triumphed with 1,532 votes well ahead of Tambuwal who polled 693 votes. Senate President Bukola Saraki got 317 votes.
