Akwa Ibom Women Demand Sack Of CP Kimo

Thousands of Akwa Ibom women on Wednesday morning marched out in Uyo to demand the immediate sack of embattled police commissioner, Musa Kimo.

Kimo was last week deployed to Akwa Ibom in the heat of the invasion of the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly by thugs allegedly loyal to the 5 sacked All Progressives Congress members in the assembly.

Governor Udom Emmanuel and Speaker Onofiok Luke have repeatedly accused the police as abetting the two-time invasion of the chambers of the assembly by the ousted members and thugs allegedly hired by them.

The women, led by the state commissioner for women affairs, Dr Glory Edet, the PDP women leader in the state, Mrs Mmeme Akpabio, and a former minister of lands, Dr Akon Eyakenyi, stormed the assembly complex at 9am to express their solidarity to the governor amidst what they described as “intimidation by the federal government.”

“For the sake of peace in this state, we want the removal of Commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo from our state. We have always had peace, and we want that peace to continue. We cannot have a police force that will abet the level of illegality that we have witnessed in the House of Assembly. Introducing anything other than peace in Akwa Ibom is alien to our people. When there is crisis anywhere and women step in, there is always peace. This is why we have stepped in”, the commissioner for women affairs said.

Speaker of the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Barr Onofiok Luke, while addressing the women, urged the women to continue to pray for peace and to not be afraid but to rise at all times to defend our hard won democracy. He recalled that Akwa Ibom  state was peaceful until certain elements decided in August 2018 to declare “warsaw” in the state.

Yesterday, five former members of the House, Nse Ntuen, Idongesit Ituen, Gabriel Toby, Victor Udofia, and Otobong Ndem, led thugs to attack the state assembly in what Speaker Onofiok Luke has described as the most scandalous desecration of the state legislature yet.
