At least 14 persons have been confirmed dead after the stampede that occurred at the All Progressives Congress, APC presidential campaign rally in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State on Tuesday.

The death of the party supporters worsened the fate of the party after the Supreme Court on Tuesday rebuffed the last move by the party to field candidates for state and federal level positions in the forthcoming General Election.

The death of the 14 it was gathered came as party supporters tried to force their way through a locked exit gate at the Adokiye Amasiemeka Stadium in the city.

Many of those who died were reportedly trampled upon by people trying to leave the stadium.

A senior staff of UPTH who confirmed the death said that a number of other party supporters who were equally trampled were also being treated in the emergency unit of the hospital.

The development has further clouded the prospects of the APC which earlier in the day got the final news of its exit from all elections in the state. The Supreme Court in its decision said that the APC was ineligible to field candidates for governor, National Assembly and state constituency offices in the forthcoming General Election.

The leader of the party in the state, Rt. Hon. Chibuke Amaechi had before the tragedy vowed to remain in Port-Harcourt after the rally to ensure that he fights to put the Governor Nyesom Wike era to an end.

President Muhammadu Buhari also at the rally said his heart was with the people over the Supreme Court decision but vowed to continue on his agenda of fighting corruption and other ills of the society if re-elected.nn
