The presidency stepped in Tuesday afternoon after popular actress and social activist Omotola Ekeinde set social media ablaze with a strong criticism of the Muhammadu Buhari administration’s perceived failures to address the economic deprivations and insecurity in the land.

Ekeinde who particularly blasted Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for failing to bring his pastoral and professorial competence to bear in the affairs of the administration was supported on Tuesday by Senator Shehu Sani among many twitter handlers.

The presidency, however, blasted her by saying that those working for clean money were not grumbling like those Ekeinde muttered were suffering.

Omotola had following a meeting of her old school mates from the prestigious Atlantic Hall last weekend tweeted on Sunday about the bad situation in the country.

She had said:

The Country Under your watch is Hellish! @ProfOsinbajo @MBuhari @NGRPresident The lack of Money in circulation,Now coupled with the Continuous Assault n Killings by Uniformed men’ll make this Country implode!!!It’s Unbearable! Do something!Insecurity!Fear n Desperation everywhere

As the controversy swirled, Omotola followed up on Monday with an explanation saying in another tweet:

I attended my secondary school alumni meeting yesterday and I felt really, really sad about Nigeria. Bear in mind this is Atlantic Hall we’re talking about, so pretty much all of us won the birth lottery to begin with. But EVERYBODY IS LEAVING NIGERIA. This is not a drill.

Her outburst received strong denunciation from some associates and sympathisers of the presidency some of who denounced her for lamenting because she and her associates had been shut out from easy money.

Responding to her, a member of the Buhari Campaign team, tweeting under the name, CBN Gov Akinsola AK, responded on Tuesday, saying:

Omosexy: Your government doing bad

Omotola Mama, tell us if you use to pick money from the street before now. Or are you saying your movies are not selling again? As if the President and Vice President removed all the money in circulation?

The Buhari Campaign communication strategist followed up with another tweet when he said:

“As for security where were you in 2014 when Boko Haram was doing promo in Abuja? When mosques and churches can’t open because of Bombs?

Sister we know those your customers are not seeing free money again. Those senators!

The tweet forced the thespian to block him from her tweeter handle. Some other abusive Buhari supporters were also blocked by Omotola from her tweeter space.

The assertions were dismissed by the presidency on Tuesday morning which backed up the accusations earlier made by the Buhari campaign activist. Speaking through Bashir Ahmad, the president’s special assistant on social media, said:

“Madam Omotola those who are working for CLEAN money are not complaining and will never refer our dear country as ‘hellish’. In Kano State alone, from 2015 to 2018, no fewer than 200 medium and small scale rice milling centres emerged. For that, billions circulated among millions.”

She was, however, firmly backed by some tweeter handlers including Senator Shehu Sani, former education minister, Oby Ezekwesili, social media activist, Deji Adeyanju among several others.

Responding on Tuesday, April 16, while observing that Omotola’s view was popular among Nigerians, Senator Sani said:

“Omotola’s view reflects the views of millions of poor Nigerians;throwing mud on her cannot not twist the reality.

Comrade Deji Adeyanju on his part said:

“If @Realomosexy were one of those artistes depending on Govt patronage, she can never speak up. Those who depend on government for their source of income or business cannot speak the truth in today’s Nigeria. Neither can those afraid of going to jail. Full blown tyranny.”

Mrs. Ezekwesili who herself fell out with the Buhari government months after it came to power in her response to the attacks by government agents said:

“We all know foolish hubris when we see it. The world is filled with relics of governments that ignored the outcries of their citizens. Don’t worry yourself.”

Responding to Mr. Ahmad’s claim, Omosexy said:

“Nope, he already fessed up. He didn’t disagree with me… but had to speak up as he works for the current  govt I mentioned. Lol… I understood.  No point getting home to lose his job.”
