“The Federal Government has secured the release of Zainab Habibu Aliyu who was arrested in Saudi Arabia for alleged drug trafficking.”

Special assistant to the president on Diaspora Matters, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had recently given notice of the president’s intervention on the issue “President Muhammadu Buhari gave the directive immediately the matter was brought to his attention about two weeks ago. My office has been working with the AGF as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in that regard”, Dabiri-Erewa revealed.

The president’s intervention followed a plea from the girl’s father, Habib Aliyu to the president and the Saudi authorities that the drugs were smuggled unto her by the drug cartel operating out of the Kano airport. An investigation by the Nigerian authorities had confirmed the suspicion and triggered the president’s intervention.

Zainab, a student of Maitama Sule University, Kano was on a trip with her family to Saudi Arabia when she was intercepted with what was said to have been luggage tagged in her name but not ferried by her.
