Muhammed Mahmood, Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), who was kidnapped alongside his daughter on Monday along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway has been released.

News of the release was broken by the presidency on Tuesday afternoon, though details were not given.

Mahmood, was undoubtedly one of the closest associates of the president to be affected by the raging wave of insecurity that has been symbolized by the repeated kidnap of motorists along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway. He was one of the key political strategists of the president way before the 2014 victory of the president in the All Progressives Congress, APC presidential primary.

News of the release of the release of Mahmod and his daughter was conveyed on twitter by Saleh Ashaka and confirmed by presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad.

The kidnap of the UBEC chairman had attracted national commentaries with denunciation of the state of insecurity in the country. A recent Senate report alleged that as many as 3,000 Nigerians were being held as hostages by kidnappers across the country.
