Buhari’s State Visit To Imo In Suspense As Okorocha Expresses Hope

Plans by Rochas Okorocha to bring Muhammadu Buhari to commission several projects reportedly executed by the outgoing governor in Imo State have been put on hold.

The president was advertised by Governor Okorocha to arrive Owerri on Tuesday morning. However, the president was as at Tuesday morning still in Saudi Arabia where he went to perform the lesser hajj. The president may have also used the time away from the country for consultations as he was understood to have met Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Saudi Arabia.

With Buhari’s first term and Okorocha’s second term both due on Wednesday stakeholders in Owerri were very doubtful of the presidential visit still holding.

That was even made more doubtful with the public disclosure by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC that it is probing Okorocha.

Announcing the postponement of the presidential visit, Sam Onwuemeodo, chief press secretary to the governor in a statement early on Tuesday said:

“We humbly wish to  inform the  general  public and Imo people  in particular that  His Excellency, the president and Commander -in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the  Federal  Republic  of  Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, has not  returned from Saudi Arabia where he is at the  moment   with other Muslims from all parts of  the world on pilgrimage.

“Against the backdrop of this development, the scheduled visit of the president to Imo State for the Commissioning of some key projects of Governor Rochas Okorocha  on  Tuesday May 21, 2019 (today)  has been  postponed.

“A new date for the visit will also be made public in due course, once the president comes back from Saudi Arabia.

“We ask for understanding and also regret the inconvenience this development might have thrown up.

“The Governor and the good people of Imo state heartily wish Mr President a hitch-free trip back to Nigeria.”

Among the projects expected to have been unveiled during the presidential visit was a giant statue of Buhari.
