Rebuffing entreaties from the All Progressives Congress, APC the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday declared Bello Matawalle of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of Zamfara state governorship election.

The declaration was made by chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu at a press conference in Abuja.

The declaration followed the judgment of the Supreme Court on Friday which ruled the All Progressives Congress, APC as not being a legal participant in the elections in the state and as such that all the votes scored by the party in the state as being wasted.

Besides the governorship, INEC ruled the PDP which came second in all the elections in the state as winner of all the other positions contested including National Assembly and State House of Assembly.

It makes Zamfara which had all the while been a stronghold of the APC now a stronghold of the PDP.

This medium understands that the APC had been trying to cut short the declaration of Mattawale as governor-elect on the claim that he may not have obtained the constitutional spread required.

Among the clear losers with the decision are the outgoing governor of the state Alhaji Abdulazziz Yari who had won a Senate seat, the minister of defence, Col. Mansur Ali (rtd.) and the incumbent deputy national chairman of the APC, Senator Lawali Shuaibu who are both from the state. The minister and Shuaibu are both from the state.

The governor-elect, Matawalle had scored 189,452 to emerge second in the governorship election.
