Asks Buhari to balance religion in his actions

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to pay heed to Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo’s admonition on the fulanisation of the country. The umbrella body of Christians in the country in a statement on Saturday also flayed the president for embarking on a summit of the Organsiation of Islamic Conference, OIC as the first assignment of his second term saying the organisation’s Islamist agenda breaches the secularity of the country.

CAN president Dr. Samson ‘Supo Ayokunle, in the statement also expressed profound appreciation to God for sparing the life of President Olusegun Obasanjo and other passengers in the  Ethiopian Airline flight that landed in bad weather last Wednesday.

In the press statement signed by his Special Assistant (Media & Communications), Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, Ayokunle called on the Federal Government to pay keen attention to Obasanjo’s recent caution on the increasing Fulanisation of the polity.

He said:

“The likes of Obasanjo are treated as honourable statesmen and institutions in developed nations like the United States the United Kingdom, but here, we abuse our former leaders and pour venoms on them whenever their thoughts are critical to the government’s action or policies.

CAN complains that Buhari took OIC conference as first assignment of second term

“This is not only unfortunate but exposes us as a people that have lost their moral values. Obasanjo sacrifices a lot for this nation in order to make it one and great! He deserves respect and his pronouncements should be treated with caution. The truth is evident for those who care to see the danger of Obasanjo’s warning except those who are either part of the agenda or are just being mischievous.

“When the perceived genocide started in Southern Kaduna, how many of the suspected herdsmen involved in the barbaric attacks were arrested by the security men? How many of them have been detained and are being prosecuted? We don’t know of any as far as CAN is concerned. How many guns have been recovered from them? Instead in Adamawa State, five Christian young men were arrested, tried and sentenced to death for allegedly killing a herd boy.

“Why we are totally against the killing of any human being, we question the promptness with which the suspects were arrested by the police. Why can’t they use the same expertise to arrest the rampaging herdsmen? While guns owned illegally by herdsmen were not recovered from them, the government instead directed that those who are licensed to hold guns should submit them.

“Another example of justice denied was that of Kaduna State. Kaduna State Government once claimed that they had some 17 suspects responsible for the killings in Southern Kaduna. Almost three years ago, we never heard anything about the case again. So, if the government is not aware or is not interested in the Fulanisation agenda, the way and manner it has been handling the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association advocating for them in various ways in order for the criminal members of the Association to be excused from blame puts a question mark on government’s sincerity in bringing criminals to book.

Obasanjo’s cautioned against Fulani agenda

“You can’t be treating criminals with kids’ gloves and expect them to change. That is why when these killers realised that nothing would happen to them, they now increased the tempo and started attacking with impunity. They have now graduated to an unprecedented level of kidnapping for ransom.

“In a similar vein and with all the cries we have made about the unconstitutionality of Nigeria’s membership of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) after being sworn in, going for such a conference was still the first assignment of President Muhammadu Buhari. This is an organisation which states it is “the collective voice of the Muslim world” and works to “safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony”. Are the government officials listening to those who voted them into power at all?

“Is the government not heating up the polity? We all remember how Nigeria was smuggled into OIC during the military. We wonder if the President is ready to attend the meeting of the World Council of Churches or be asking the Vice President to represent him whenever the members meet.

“As President Buhari begins another term, we appeal to him to have a blueprint for the security challenges facing the country. He should see the whole country as his and avoid lopsided appointments in every facet of the government, especially, the appointment chief security officers. The security councils and other agencies of the government must not be dominated by people who share same faith and ethnicity with him. This is unprecedented in the history of Nigeria. The preponderance of the Fulani people at the corridors of power is what Chief Obasanjo refers to as fulanisation agenda.”
