The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s is at this hour reinventing its strategy ahead of the Senate leadership contest after a major part of the script to divide and rule the majority in the All Progressives Congress, APC fell apart.

The party gwg.ng learnt had planned to foist Senator Francis Alimekhena (APC, Edo North) as the deputy president of the Senate with Senator Ali Ndume as president.

However, while Ndume has been opened to the plot, Alimekhena it was gathered has opted out leaving the party’s sole position to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege whose nomination is vehemently despised by the PDP senators.

Alimekhena it was learnt dropped his interest on Tuesday leaving the PDP to formulate another strategy. One of the unfolding plots, gwg.ng gathered could be the last-minute entry of Senator Ike Ekweremadu into the contest.

With 44 senators on their side, the PDP need 11 senators from the APC to execute their coup but only if they are able to keep their members intact.

Alimkehena’s possible involvement in a coup against the APC leadership’s position would have been particularly traumatic given the fact that he represents the APC’s national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in the Senate. It would have drawn insinuations against the national chairman and made his position more untenable after the loss of five states in the recent General Election.

Besides, the party’s decision on Omo-Agege was a direct flow from the cabal around President Muhammadu Buhari which is apparently recompensing him on his role in confronting the Bukola Saraki leadership, that climaxed with the mace-snatching incident in 2018.
