The president of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan has dismissed news reports quoting him as saying that the 2023 presidency should be the pick of the Southwest.

Responding to the claim on twitter on Monday morning the President of the Senate said the assertion was made by the Adamawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Ahmed Lawan who he said bears a similar name as him.

Lawan had been quoted by some news channels (not GWG) as saying: “The President and indeed our party must beware of divisive elements who are now proponents of retaining power in the North beyond 2023.

“I have said it before and I believe that 2023 presidential ticket of the APC must go to the South West.”

It was, however, easy for some to believe that Lawan would have said so given the significant role Southwest political leaders and notably, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu played in ensuring his victory in the Senate leadership election last Tuesday.

However, Lawan has now come out to deny the claim saying that it was his namesake and secretary of the Adamawa State chapter that said so.

“My attention has been drawn to a statement circulating on various media platforms credited to me as saying that power must shift to the South West in 2023. This is a misrepresentation of fact and identity.

The statement is said to have been made by the Secretary of Adamawa State APC, Ahmed Lawan, who incidentally bears similar name with me. The public should please take note,” Senator Lawan tweeted.

However, the attribution of the claim is bound to also resonate the political chemistry between some chieftains of the APC in Adamawa State and Southwest political leader, Asiwaju Tinubu.

Erstwhile Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF who is a powerful influence in the Adamawa State chapter of the APC is a close political associate of Tinubu’s and the secretary may have only been echoing his thoughts.
