Victor Olugbenro a journalist was among those arrested by law enforcement agencies at National Stadium, Surulere Lagos over revolution protest.

Recall that Omoyele Sowore,  a fierce critic of President Muhammadu Buhari  who contested the 2019 presidential  election on the platform of  African Action Congress, AAC, was arrested over the weekend after announcing the “#RevolutionNow” protests across the country for Monday.

Early in the morning, security agencies have barricaded entrance to the National Stadium, venue of the planned protest in Lagos and started firing live ammunition to disperse the crowd.  In the process, some people sustained injury.

A number of prominent Nigerians, including Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, have condemned the arrest. Soyinka in a statement described the move as a “travesty and violation of the fundamental rights of citizens” reminiscent of the iron-fisted rule of military dictator Sani Abacha in the 1990s.

On Sunday, the Department of State Service,  DSS spokesman Peter Afunaya confirmed that Sowore had been detained and was in custody.

He said, “We cannot allow any person or group to foment chaos or fan the embers of revolution.

“If someone is calling for revolution in Nigeria, it means a revolt… insurgency. He has crossed the line, threatened public safety.”
