Faction Removes Sowore As Chairman Of AAC

Locked away by the Department of State Services, DSS, Mr. Omoyele Sowore was on Friday removed as national chairman of the African Action Congress, AAC, and expelled at a special convention of the party in Owerri, Imo State. The convention was sponsored by a faction of the party.

The move was immediately dismissed by the National Legal Adviser of the party, Inibehe Effiong who dismissed the move as laughable. He challenged the organisers of the Owerri convention to make public the sponsors of the event.

Sowore who is one of the brains behind the RevolutionNow Movement was also the AAC’s presidential candidate in the last General Election.

Leonard Nzewa who emerged as the factional chairman of the party at the convention apologized on behalf of the party for human lives and property lost during the 2019 election in Rivers State said, “The AAC did not go into the Rivers governorship election to win, as our candidate, Mr. Awara, did not have the required capacity to win”. 

Besides Sowore, 27 other national officers of the party were also dismissed by the convention.

The special national convention which was monitored by the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The programme started with a remark by the Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee, Comrade Yahaya Mohammed, and motion for the ratification of the suspension of Sowore and 28 others.

Addressing the delegates after the election, the new National Chairman, acknowledged the constitutional rights of citizens to peacefully protest against government, adding that “this right does not include a right to resort to unconstitutional takeover of the government of the country or any part thereof”.

He said, “The situations in the country today are dire. The insecurity is worsening. The economy is failing. Unemployment digits are increasing. Healthcare provision and education are at the lowest ebb. Depression and hopelessness are the reality of citizens. The rhetoric has failed and citizens are no more inspired.”
