The Peoples Democratic Party screening committee, Wednesday, cleared 21 and 13 aspirants respectively to contest the Bayelsa and Kogi State governorship primaries coming up on September 3.

The clearance given the aspirants from Bayelsa State came against the backdrop of allegations that at least three of the aspirants have challenges with their Secondary School certificates.

The committee it was gathered, however, resolved to look the other way in the light of the huge sum collected from the aspirants for the forms.

Meanwhile, national chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus has pledged the complete neutrality of the National Working Committee, NWC in the primaries in the two states.

At the ceremony to give out the clearance certificates to the cleared aspirants, Secondus charged the aspirants not to depend on the NWC as he said that the body would maintain complete neutrality in the process.

All 13 and all 21 aspirants who paid the stipulated N21 million for the forms were cleared to contest the primary election.

However, a source revealed that at least three of the aspirants from Bayelsa State were alleged to have issues with their certificates.

A source privy to the development, however, said the committee found it unconscionable to disqualify anyone.

“How can we disqualify someone after they had paid that kind amount of money?” the source inferred as he said that the agreement was for all aspirants to go and test their might in the field,” the senior official disclosed.

Pledging to ensure complete neutrality and allow the will of the party members to prevail in the two states, Secondus in an address said:

“None of you should rely on the National Working Committee or any leader of this party for that matter. As you are aware, the NWC has no preferred candidate. On September 3, this party will conduct a transparent primary election for both the Kogi and Bayelsa states and as such, there will be no compromise.”
