Thursday’s surprise visit of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to President Muhammadu Buhari in the Aso Rock Presidential Villa has triggered significant news mileage and prompted several deductions as to what would have brought the third president of the Fourth Republic to his former abode.

The questions as to Jonathan’s presence follow his remarkable absence from some presidential functions including the National Council of States. He has not been to the Presidential Villa since 2016 at the height of the attacks on his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan.

Despite his increasing global presence in election observation missions, (he is leaving the country on another trip on Friday) President Jonathan was conspicuously absent at ceremonies that heralded the second term inauguration of his successor, Buhari. So it was a surprise for newshounds when the former president stepped into his former abode of five years.

Leaving the presidential palace on Thursday, President Jonathan amiably parried questions from newsmen even as he extended greetings to Aso Rock staff who came to wish him well.

So, what could have brought Jonathan to meet with Buhari? In the closed world of presidents, and there are less than a handful in Nigeria, closed-door exchanges between presidents are often not easily known by the media. So for now, we can only guess unless Femi Adesina or Garba Shehu is briefed to let the cat out of the bag.
But here are some popular guesses:

  • Toast to the Groom

If indeed President Buhari is set to marry the minister of humanitarian affairs, President Jonathan would have been one of those that would have been duly informed and invited.

Some have suggested that Dr. Jonathan came to toast the groom on his new marriage and take permission for his absence on account of his departure to Maputo, Mozambique on Friday as leader of the African Observation Mission for the election holding there.

  • Briefing on International Diplomatic Mission

It is the view of some that President Jonathan may have gone to Aso Rock to brief the president on the outcome of one of his several diplomatic missions in recent times.

Suggestions to this point were canvassed by the presence of a report on a table before the two men.

  • Madam P’s Problems

Some also suggested that President Jonathan may have gone to plead for a soft landing for his wife who has been the subject of several investigations by some federal prosecution agencies.

  • None of the Above And it may as well be that none of the guesses given above is correct and we may well wait until President Buhari decides to write his memoirs for us to get a glimpse into what the two presidents discussed for about 15 minutes on 10/10/19
