Governor Godwin Obaseki on Sunday denied any role in an attack on his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in Benin City just as the immediate past governor of Edo State rallied his supporters not to yield to provocations.

The assertions by the incumbent and immediate past governors of Edo State came as Obaseki’s chief of staff, Taiwo Akerele also claimed that he was attacked by an associate of Oshiomhole’s, Tony Adun, popularly known on the streets of Benin as Kabaka.

The attack on Oshiomhole on Saturday, according to sources, was instigated by thugs who thronged his Benin GRA residence in an attempt to hurl abuses at the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC who was in town for a private ceremony.

Sources disclosed that some youths had gathered at the vicinity of Oshiomhole’s residence to rain insults on him until associates of the national chairman and security agencies mobilized a counter force to drive them away.

Eventually, Oshiomhole passed the night in Protea Hotel in the GRA section of the town.

Governor Obaseki was, however, quick to distance himself from the attack from his predecessor, saying through a statement issued by his spokesman, Crusoe Osagie “We have no knowledge of the attack. We have also reached out to the Police, and they affirmed that they do not know about such an attack.”

Oshiomhole on his part while suing for peace from his supporters said:

“In moments like this, it is not madness for madness because many of you I see here, in 2007, you were already strong, 2012 during my second term, you were there, 2016, many of you deployed as agents; I used to call you guys our infantry Division who protected our votes even when we were in opposition when the federal government was PDP so now that the federal government is APC, we have to take it easy so that there is no breach of peace anywhere in Nigeria and particularly in our state.

“Those people who are looking for trouble, they are like a small mushroom; if you go and take a stick to destroy a mushroom, do you need a stick to do that? How far can a snail travel? If a snail is running, what s the maximum speed of a snail? Are you going to join running after snail?

“I was contesting in 2012, two men wore red went round town saying I will not get my second term, that they have declared war on me I called our women and said go and out on white; the red they wore is their blood, the white is our peace from that position till today by the Special Grace of God I am what I am. What God has willed no man can change it.”

Meanwhile, the exchange between Kabaka and Akerele reportedly happened at the Protea Hotel when the former came to see Oshiomhole following the news of the attack on him.
