Bayelsa/Kogi 2019 Election
After Kogi Yahaya Bello Sets Sights On Presidency
Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has set his sights on a higher political office with the presidency being speculated as his next target.
Speaking when he collected his certificate of return on Thursday, Governor Bello said that the event would not be the last time he would be collecting a return certificate from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
He, however, did not specify the office he would be contesting for. Suggestions that it would be the presidency are being fueled by the fact that Bello is not expected to leave the Kogi Government House until January 2024.
No Nigerian governor has stepped down from the office of governor to enter the Senate.
However, by the time the 2023 presidential election is contested for he would still be in the office as governor and could use the office as a launching pad for the presidency.
Bello won election for a second term after a bloody election that was characterized with violence and alleged irregularities.
Bello received the certificate of return alongside the deputy governor, Chief Onoja.
The certificates were presented to the two men by the INEC Commissioner for the North Central, Mohammed Haruna in the presence of the Kogi State Resident Electoral Officer, Prof. Joseph Apam.
Noting the challenges the commission went through in the course of the election, Apam said:
“We know what we went through to get to this stage and its time to settle down for the job ahead,” he noted.
