A 20-year-old man, Linus Ojim, on Monday pleaded guilty at a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos to assaulting his father and step-mother as well as damaging her foodstuffs.

The chief magistrate, Mrs Oluwatoyin Oghere, ordered that the defendant should be remanded in prison and adjourned the case to Dec. 4 for a review of the facts of the case and sentencing.

Ojim, a resident of Somolu area of Lagos State, is facing charges of assault and willful damage to property.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, had told the court that the defendant committed the offences at about 10.30p.m.on Nov. 17, at No. 26, Oluwalogbon St., Somolu.

According to her, the defendant had returned home drunk on the day of the incident and was being cautioned by his step-mother.

She said that the defendant, however, decided to give her fist blows on her mouth.

He also damaged her step mother’s fruits and foodstuffs worth N5,500 that she had displayed for sale.

Olaluwoye alleged that the defendant’s father was beaten up by the defendant when he heard the noise between his son and his step mother and attempted to intervene.

She told the court that the defendant’s act of Nov. 17 was not the first of its kind.

She said that the parents after the latest assault from the defendant were admitted in a hospital due to the serious injuries they sustained.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 350 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.(Revised)

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 stipulates a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm while Section 350 prescribes two-years’ jail term for willful damage to property.
